Metastatic Lung Cancer Affects Other Body Parts

Lung cancer is strongly related to smoking. Cigarette smoke contains over 4000 chemicals, of which 43 are carcinogenic (cancer-causing). These carcinogenic compounds include carbon monoxide, tar, nicotine, arsenic, formaldehyde, etc. Other causes of the disease include radon gas, asbestos, particulate matter, and viruses. Nicotine is highly addictive, thus it can be difficult for smokers to quit their unhealthy habit, even after they are diagnosed with the disease. It becomes even worse because once a smoker has the disease, his or her remaining lifetime will be significantly short, because the survival rate of this cancer is lower than that of other cancers. The cancerous cells can also spread at a faster rate to other parts of body. And even if they don't, a sufferer will still experience breathing problems.

In most cases, metastatic lung cancer affects the liver, brains, adrenal glands and bones. To determine the extent of the cancer spread can be determined using an assessment technique known as lung cancer staging. Staging varies for the two types of the cancer, namely the Small Cell Lung Carcinoma (SCLC) and the Non-Small Cell Lung Carcinoma (NSCLC).

The SCLC staging can be classified as either limited stage or extensive stage. In the limited stage, the tumor is found in one lung or only in the lymph nodes of that lung. In the extensive stage, the tumor has spread into both lungs or other organs in the body. When the cancer has reached the latter stage, chemotherapy is usually the preferred treatment. However, the NSCLC is the most widely used staging scheme. It is divided into four stages, with stage 1 being the mildest form, and stage 4 being the most severe form. NSCLCs can also be categorized into 3 subgroups, namely adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and large cell carcinoma. Adenocarcinoma is the most common type, accounting for 40% of all NSCLC cases. It is also the most common type of lung cancer found in non-smokers ("never-smokers").

Whether the lung cancer affects other body parts or not would depend on the cancer cell metastasis. To determine whether it has metastatized or not, doctors would use diagnostic techniques such as conventional chest radiography, computerized tomography (CT) scanning, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography (PET) scanning. Based on the test results, your doctor can determine the best treatment for you. Treatment options include radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and targeted drug therapy. However, metastatic lung cancer is very difficult to treat, because the cells have spread into various parts of the body. To treat this disease, each and every cell needs to be removed, and this is not an easy thing to do.

Like other types of cancer, there is a possibility that lung cancer affects other body parts too. To find out more about this disease, please visit our website.

So, What Is This Myofascial Release Stuff Really All About?

There was a time, not too long ago, when I would introduce myself as a Myofascial Release therapists and the response would often be "you give facials?". No, I do not put masks on your face and clean your pores. Thankfully, that is not the case so much any more. But there is still a long way to go before Myofascial Release (MFR) is as common a therapy as Massage Therapy or Chiropractic care. However, Myofascial Release is gaining credibility among the medical community as well as the general public as an effective health care therapy in the treatment of chronic pain such as fibromyalgia, low back and neck pain, and chronic headaches just to name a few. It is also very effective in treating acute pain, injuries and for post treatment of surgeries.

Fascial Tissue

In order to talk about treating either chronic pain or acute pain caused by fascial restrictions it is necessary to talk about what fascial tissue is. Once thought to only be the covering surrounding the muscular tissue, thus defining each muscle, fascial tissue is now known to be a much more complex system in our body. Fascial tissue is a connective tissue in the body. It surrounds and permeates through everything throughout our entire body including muscles, bones, organs, circulatory tissue, nervous tissue, brain matter, and everything in between. Fascial tissue has even been found at the cellular level. It can be visualized as a complex, three-dimensional web (or net) connected from the top of our heads to the bottom of our feet.

Fascial tissue is so integrated in our body that when one area of the fascial system changes, it can have a profound affect throughout the entire fascial system. Imagine a three-dimensional, connected web that has no beginning or end running through our entire body. Imagine pulling just one string of the web, let's say at your shoulder. Go ahead, visualize for a moment, I'll wait...Got it? Well, as you pull on just that one string can you see the immediate, attached surrounding strings? They are feeling the effect of that pull. What about what's happening to the secondary strings? Then the strings attached to those strings? And then the ones attached to those...Well, you can see where I am going with this. This is exactly what is happening in the fascial system in our body every minute of every day. Where these fascial restrictions pull in the body is very unpredictable but once a restriction has been established it can tighten around very pain sensitive areas and unbalance the structures in the body causing acute pain symptoms that when left untreated will turn into chronic pain.

Fascial Restrictions

There are several different causes for restrictions to occur in the fascial tissue including inflammation processes, injury, trauma to the body, and holding patterns. These restrictions cannot be seen on any of the standard medical tests like X-rays, MRI's, CAT scans or PET scans. Because of this symptoms due to fascial restrictions have often gone misdiagnosed, mistreated or, worse yet the patient has been told that no one really knows what is wrong and there is nothing that can be done. However, a trained Myofascial Release therapist can help you to unravel and loosen these restrictions thus freeing you from the pain these restrictions cause.

Myofascial Release Treatment

Like the proverbial bucket filling up one tiny water drop at a time, the body develops fascial restrictions one cell at a time. If the bucket is not watched, over a long period of time it seems to have magically filled with water once you notice it again. So, too, the body develops restrictions in the fascial system. We may notice the "water drops" in our fascial system tightening and from time to time say things like "boy, I'm getting older and stiffer" or "I just don't seem to be able to move the way I used to". Then when the "bucket" is full its "I tore my rotator cuff and all I did was pick up a bag of groceries" or "I just bent down to pick up a book and threw my back out". By the way, these are actual quotes from my clients.

Myofascial Release treatments have been described as a deep, deep prolonged stretch and can be very relaxing. It is important to realize that although highly effective, you begin to see that MFR therapies are slow-paced and take time to facilitate. It did not take you an hour to get you into the situation that you are in. It will not take one hour to get you out of it. Each person is individual so each session will be different depending on what is going on with your body at the time of your session. Some sessions will take you to different levels of relaxation and some sessions will be very active. Some sessions you will be left with a feeling of great change with a resolution to your symptoms and others you will be wondering if anything happened at all. Because of the unpredictable nature of the fascial tissue there can be no promises made of what changes will happen with each session only that there will be changes. Therefore, it is important to see this therapy in the big picture. Over time Myofascial Release therapy will help ease the symptoms of acute pain and chronic pain such as in low back pain, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, knee pain, foot pain to name just a few.

Treating Multiple Myeloma Naturally

Multiple myeloma is a cancer that commences in plasma cells which are a part of the white blood cells present in the blood circulation. These plasma cells play an important part in the immune system of the body by producing antibodies to help protect the body against infection and damage. In this disease, plasma cells become abnormal and are then termed as myeloma cells, which produce antibodies known as M proteins. These myeloma cells gradually crowd out the normal cells within the bones and produce symptoms in several bones at a time, because of which this condition is termed as multiple myeloma. When myeloma cells collect in one single bone, this mass is known as plasmacytoma.

Multiple myeloma produces symptoms such as weakness, tiredness, frequent infections, frequent thirst, bone pains - especially the back, broken bones, frequent urination, nausea, constipation, anaemia, weight loss, kidney failure, and amyloidosis. Multiple myeloma is diagnosed with the help of tests such as x-rays for bones, high levels of plasma cells and calcium in the blood, M protein and Beta 2 microglobulin, and Bence Jones protein test for 24 hours urine. A bone marrow examination is usually diagnostic of this condition. CT scan, MRI, and PET scan can be utilised to identify the spread of the disease and severity, after which the disease is graded so as to define the treatment plan for this condition. Anticancer drugs, radiation therapy, and stem cell transplantation constitute the conventional treatment for this condition. Overall, response to anticancer drugs and radiation therapy is quite poor, and most patients stop responding after some time.

Ayurvedic herbal treatment is especially useful in the treatment of multiple myeloma, since it treats both the original problem in the bone marrow and also treats its associated symptoms. The herbal medicines which are used in the management of this condition have a specific action on the bone marrow and stimulate it to start producing normal plasma and other blood cells. Simultaneously, other medicines are utilised in order to kill and remove the abnormal plasma cells from the blood and the bones. These dead cells are then flushed out from the body either from the gastrointestinal tract or through the kidneys via the urine.

Herbo- mineral medicines can be used in the management of multiple myeloma which normalise the production of red blood cells and white blood cells and thereby treat symptoms such as weakness, tiredness, frequent thirst and anaemia. Removal of the abnormal plasma cells from the bones reduces bone pains and prevents or reduces fracture of bones due to bone weakness. The excess calcium present in the blood is redirected towards the bones to normalise the disturbed metabolism resulting from multiple myeloma. Medicines which remove the debris, dead cancer cells, and generated toxins through the kidneys also have a preserving function on the kidneys so that these are not damaged due to the disease. If the affected individual exhibits symptoms of amyloidosis, this condition needs to be treated separately with Ayurvedic medicines.

Some Ayurvedic medicines which are useful in the management of multiple myeloma include Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis),Gokshur (Tribulus terrestris), Abhadi Guggulu, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut Gugglu,Gokshuradi Guggulu and Mahamanjishthadi Qadha. Most individuals affected with multiple myeloma require Ayurvedic treatment for about 9 to 15 months in order to benefit significantly from treatment and obtain considerable relief from this condition. Ayurvedic treatment can definitely bring about a good response in this condition, which has so far proved to be refractory to conventional treatment, and herbal treatment can provide significant improvement in the quality of life as well as survival of affected individuals. Ayurvedic herbal treatment thus has a significant contribution to play in the management and treatment of multiple myeloma.

Integrating Sexuality and Spirituality

Take a look at the world around us, and it becomes readily apparent that we are living in a time of simultaneous convergence and deconstruction. As there is a resurging interest in spiritual practices in many circles, there is also a breakdown in the patriarchal, hierarchical church structures. The specter of clergy sexual abuse intermingles with a worldview promulgated by the church about the nature of relationships and sexuality that no longer has meaning for people today - men and women, young and even middle-aged. The gender roles we were raised with have broken down and blurred. The image of nuclear family as mom, dad and 2.4 children has been superseded by a far greater spectrum of family possibilities. Bisexuality, androgyny, gender fluidity and polyamory are more and more common, especially among the twenty something generation.

Erotic energy is far more than sexual energy. It is life energy. As our culture has evolved splits between mind and body, head and heart, heart and pelvis and sexuality and spirituality, we have forgotten what it means to be fully alive.

"Erotic energy is not just about having sex," continues Suzanne Blackburn, whose participation in sexuality and spirituality work has catapulted her personal and spiritual growth. "It is about living." As we have become disconnected from our bodies, hearts, souls, spirits, one another and the divine, we have lost touch with many of the most beautiful pleasures and experiences possible in being human. So many people today are searching for meaning and purpose, most often expressed through job dissatisfaction, addictions and broken or troubled relationships. The rise of industrialization, urbanization, the nation-state, global dislocations, war and poverty all contribute to the sex-spirit split for us both individually and collectively.

"Because our culture has repressed sexuality so much, it is repressing everything," acknowledges Blackburn. "People who have repressed sexuality have also repressed other areas of their lives. If you are not joyful about your sexuality, it is hard to be joyful about watching a sunset or watching kittens play. Hopefully, by breathing life into one, you breathe life into all of it. It's like giving birth. When the baby comes out of the birth canal and takes a breath, the baby pinks up. When we open up, breathe deeply, have fun, when we dance, we pink up." This backdrop provides fertile soil for an emerging movement working to integrate sexuality and spirituality.

Living in the Midst of a Paradigm Shift

Bob Francouer, a teacher of graduate and undergraduate classes in Human Sexuality at Fairleigh Dickinson University and the editor of the Encyclopedia of Sexuality notes, "Sexuality and spirituality have always been joined and interwoven from the very beginning of the human race. It is only in the last 2000 to 3000 years of Western civilization that the two have been separated. And they have not just been separated, but have been seen as antagonistic to each other. The split between sex and spirit came out of the Greek philosophy of dualism, and a dichotomous view of humans as matter/evil/female and spirit/good/rational/male."

Just as Western civilization went through a period of major cultural upheaval 2000 to 3000 years ago, we are undergoing a period of major cultural turnover and paradigm shift now. "The institutional churches are losing their credibility in dealing with sexuality and spirituality. They are losing their authority," continues Francouer. Francouer is well versed in the changing paradigm worldwide. The International Encyclopedia of Sexuality is written by 300 experts in 60 countries on 6 continents. The encyclopedia includes in depth reports of all aspects of sexuality. Each country has a section on religious and ethnic influences. Having collected information from many cultures all over the world, "it becomes very clear the spiritual traditions are undergoing major revolutions in their patterns of thinking. People in many cultures worldwide are thinking now not in terms of marital and procreational values, but in terms of individual self-enrichment and fulfillment. The spiritual is a very important part of the new perspective."

Significant leadership in the sexuality and spirituality is coming from women. Francouer acknowledges, "As women in developing nations are exposed to Western concepts and experiences of human sexuality, they are linking their religious traditions with the visions of Western sexuality. As women become more empowered in third world nations, they are gaining more control over their bodies and sexuality, turning more to their spiritual heritage."

"When the human psyche reaches the point of convergence and breakthrough into a new level of consciousness," reflects Francouer, "diversity is the first thing that happens. The energy spreads out and explores all kinds of possibilities. There is no one ideal paradigm nor five ideal paradigms. All the models we have had in the past have real difficulties being applied in today's world. So people are creating their own models and patterns." The new paradigms created need to include and consider the collective as well as the individual.

A Quiet Movement and Its Roots

The emergence of the sexuality and spirituality movement is very quiet. For one, the subjects of sexuality and spirituality are each daunting. Many people are frightened at the thought of delving more deeply into either one. Too, Ani Colt, publisher of Spirituality and Sexuality magazine and founder of the Sexuality and Spirituality Union Network (SUNetwork) points out, "One of the things that energized a lot of movements was the common experience of feeling oppressed. A sense of oppression contributed to the emergence of blacks, women and homosexuals. But the oppression of our sexuality is not even recognized because sex is always in front of us. It's in ads, on TV, in the movies. It is much more subtle oppression. As a result, it hasn't given us that organizing energy that has created the feminist movement, the civil rights movement and the gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans gendered community."

Sex educator, sex coach and author Loraine Hutchins adds, "Erotophobia/sex-negativity is hard to battle because it is all pervasive and systemic. It doesn't affect any one group at the expense of another like racism. However, erotophobia, like racism, really hurts everyone and diminishes us all. I think sex-negativity is a function of heterosexism, a system of oppression created by patriarchy, involving male supremacy and mandatory heterosexuality. This oppressive system hurts men as well as women. The parallel is in looking at how whites are made less by racism, in contrast to non-whites. The hurts are different and need different remedies."

"Organized religion is of little help in the sexuality-spirituality field," Shalom Mountain Retreat Center founder Gerry Jud acknowledges. "I make a big distinction between religion and spirituality. Religion is about controlling behavior. Spirituality is about development and liberation of consciousness - becoming consciousness itself. Sex permeates all of life. When people are intimate with each other, touch each other, look into each other's eyes, dance ecstatically with each other, the sexual component is out front. You cannot take an effective spiritual journey without taking into account that we are sexual beings."

The first nationwide survey on sexuality and spirituality was conducted by Gina Ogden, a sexuality therapist and author of Women Who Love Sex: An Inquiry into the Expanding Spirit of Women's Erotic Experiences. She is presently writing a book based on her survey results and hopes that the data will provide a baseline for broadening definitions of human sexuality, especially for women. Oggen contends that the field of sexology itself has reinforced the split between sexuality and spirituality. While she was a visiting scholar at the Radcliffe Institute, she happened upon the earliest sex surveys - conducted by women MDs. "The first survey, a century ago, was filled with hand-written responses about sexuality and spirituality," notes Ogden. "But since the 1930's when male scientists took over the surveying of sexual behavior, sex research became focused on what was easy to count and measure - performance by way of intercourse, orgasms and spasms, the mechanical part." In her 25 years of experience as a clinician and workshop leader, Ogden found these mechanical features to be only a fraction of what women said was important.

"Almost 4000 women and men answered my survey with an outpouring of stories about sexuality and spirituality, about love and empathy and meaning and sex as a direct path to the divine. What is fascinating is that these stories echo the responses from those early surveys, as if they're filling in almost a hundred years of blanks, the mysterious black holes in the history of the sexuality and spirituality movement. Maybe the scientific arm of the present day movement begins with Celia Mosher, who conducted that first survey in 1892!"

Ogden continues, "There is brain research coming out now because with advanced technology like MRI's and PET scans we can really look at what is going on in the human brain over a period of time, like stop action. Researchers are finding that during sexual stimulation more than one center of the brain is lighting up. This demonstrates an organic basis for arguing that sexuality and spirituality are connected, that sexual response is multi-dimensional. This is in direct disagreement with all the sex research that focuses on performance, and the medical diagnostics that say if you can't perform to their standards, it's called dysfunction. There may be a political and social movement going on, but it's important to remember that the capacity for connecting sex and spirit is in us. It is in our cells and our brain structure. It is built in. It has taken us 3000 years to remember it, to rediscover it, to validate it."

A Wide Spectrum of Trainings and Practices

Many trainings, practices and methods have evolved to help people learn to work with sexual, spiritual, and life energies in their bodies, relationships and lives. These methods have been developed by visionaries who have built a community or network of people around them. There is some cross-fertilization between these communities, but more often the right hand doesn't even know there is a left hand yet, never mind what it is doing.

Existing practices and trainings approach integrating sexuality and spirituality from many different directions. For example, the Human Awareness Institute approaches this work from an emotional and interpersonal direction, giving people skills for deeper intimacy and connection through its Love, Intimacy and Sexuality workshops. Tantric work, on the other hand, approaches the body and its energy field from a rootedness in spiritual philosophy. Sterling community work focuses on distinguishing the differences between male and female energy.

One of the common threads amongst the many approaches is the creation of a safe, sacred community circle. Joining together in holy ritual is a basic human need. We are starving for this kind of sacred circle. Trainings and workshops such as those profiled below provide help meet this need. I have selected a handful of significant programs in the sexuality and spirituality field, all of which have evolved over the past several decades. The purpose is to illustrate a range of what is available.

The Human Awareness Institute: Restoring the Purity of Heart and Soul

Stan Dale, 73, founder of the Human Awareness Institute, that has offered Love, Intimacy and Sexuality workshops worldwide for thirty four years, found himself on a path of integrating sexuality and spirituality while stationed in Japan when he was twenty seven years old. Having had a successful career in radio prior to being drafted, Stan worked at the Armed Forces Korea Network while in the service. He was put on temporary duty in Tokyo for the Far East Network, and was invited to a cast party for a motion picture being filmed there, "Joe Butterfly." The cast party took place at a geisha house, a stunning 22-acre facility with trees, butterflies and flowers and buildings that looked like palaces. Through a twist of fate, he ended up living there for seven months when an old man who lived there invited him to stay. The old man told everyone at the geisha house to treat Stan like his son. The head geisha, nearly 70, gave Stan a quartz stone.

"She said to me," remembers Stan, "'What do you see?' I said, 'a stone.' She said, 'Yes...but come back and tell me what you see later.' This went on for three days. I knew it was a trick. I examined it, had a magnifying glass, asked others what they saw...At the end of the three days, she asked me what I saw. Like a bolt of lightning, I saw the beauty of the universe. The words came out of my mouth."

"At an event that night, the head geisha stood up. She gave me an honorific bow and said, 'If you can see the beauty of the universe in a stone, you are now a geisha.' I hadn't known what geisha meant, but I sensed it was very special. The geishas taught me to look beyond everything I look at, to listen beyond everything I listen to, to go beyond what I touch. I learned an old adage to live by. If God wanted to hide, God would hide in human beings, because that is the last place we would think to look to find God."

Stan learned to look for and see the spark of God, the magnificence that is every human being which may be camouflaged or obscured as we take the hard knocks of life. "As we walk through life in this world, the garbage keeps getting dumped on spirit," notes Stan. Sufficient garbage gets dumped that people don't recognize their own heart and spirit. "When something is in the body that shouldn't be there, when it is taken out, it heals itself," acknowledges Stan. "The heart heals itself. The soul heals itself."

Just as the heart, soul and spirit get obscured by the garbage of life, sexuality has been equally misunderstood. "When we get the craziness and dirtiness out of the word sex, and put it where it belongs in spirit, heal and soul, then we get purity. "My vision is for every human being to be aware that their spirituality and sexuality is who you are, not something you get. My vision is for every person on this planet to see what is available when the garbage is indeed taken out."

Shalom Mountain Retreat Center: Sustaining Spiritual Growth and Intimacy

Gerry Jud, now 83, is one of the true pioneers in the sexuality and spirituality movement. After getting a Ph.D at Yale, he started his career as a pastor in New Haven, CT. "I became interested in the question of why, in religious groups, the level of intimacy is exquisitely limited. People who get started in the field of a religious path soon level off. The journey comes to a halt. This troubled me as a church person, and so I began to study a way in which intimacy could be found among such people who are seeking a spiritual life, and how it could be sustained."

He did his research and development work at Kirkridge, a major Protestant retreat center in Bangor, ME. Influenced by leaders in the human potential movement, including the folks at Esalen and in humanistic psychology, Gerry reached a turning point in his work when he worked with primal therapy techniques. "My first wife drowned after seventeen years of marriage. We had three little children. As a religious person, I did the best I could with that tragedy. It wasn't until I got into primal scream work that I was able to release my anger. That changed everything for me."

"That led me to see that people on their spiritual journey are not stuck in their conscious minds. They are stuck in the twilight," a deeper subconscious layer that is often inaccessible to the conscious mind. For people to move forward in their growth work, Gerry recognized they needed to work at this deeper level, which he called the "twilight zone." He developed a system in which he created an intensely tender, loving group of fifteen people. He would work with each person, one at a time, using deep breathing to put them into an altered state of consciousness.

Gerry initially started working with clergy and their wives, but his work soon grew to include people of all different religions and cultures. He eventually left his church job and founded Shalom Mountain Retreat Center in 1975. He found his work growing to include sexuality as it became apparent that the journey to God needed to include working with sexuality. Gerry's pioneering work helped give birth to yet another body of work, the Body Sacred.

Suzanne Blackburn describes the Shalom experience as "a beautiful blend of all that we know in modern psychology and all that we know about love. It's community at its best - a community that holds people to their truths and never withdraws love regardless of that truth."

Body Electric School: Learning About Erotic Energies

The Body Electric School for Erotic Massage was founded by Joseph Kramer in the early 1980's. Suzanne Blackburn speaks to the essential contribution of this work. "Kramer realized that men were compartmentalizing orgasm. For most people, initially men, if they were orgasmic, their experience happens within a five inch radius around the genitals. Kramer was interested in developing a body of knowledge to make orgasm a lot more - a full body, full person, full spiritual experience. He went on a quest to find out how to do this and created an experiential school for teaching about erotic energies."

As we live with breakdown and deconstruction at so many levels of life, one thread that emerges is a hunger and longing, both spiritual and erotic. Suzanne Blackburn, reflects, "We are in a culture of dis-remembering in a lot of ways including the natural flow of erotic energies through and around us. Alex Jade of the Body Electric School uses the term 'erotic amnesia.' A lot of work is now available to help us re-member."

Kramer drew upon ancient traditions and modern wisdom, and blended this knowledge in a new way that is accessible to men and women today. Body Electric work teaches people to wake up to their own bodies through breath, movement and touch, including Taoist erotic massage.

"Body Electric work translates ancient wisdom into practical exercises people can do in the here and now. We carry these ancient teachings in our bodies. It doesn't take a whole lot of teaching for our bodies to wake up and remember. Our bodies hold the wisdom," comments Blackburn. "In our culture it is generally not okay to take your clothes off with strangers, to talk about your genitals and erotic experience. The facilitators of Body Electric workshops are able to create a very safe space that allows people looking to be more alive in their bodies, to heal shame, open to more intimacy, celebrate living, and most importantly, to reconnect genitals and heart."

Growing out of the AIDS devastation, the sudden linking of sex with death and attempting to recover from this, the school was exclusively for men until twelve years ago. "In response to women's interests in this work, Joseph sought out women teachers," chronicles Blackburn. The school currently offers a women's program and a small mixed gender curriculum.

Sterling Men's and Women's Weekends: Distinguishing Between Masculine and Feminine Energy

An outgrowth of the human potential movement that offered us an opportunity to explore what it means to be human, Sterling men's and women's weekends provided a forum to explore what it means to be a man and what it means to be a woman.

Joe Boyer, who is involved in leadership in the Northeast region for this work, speaks to the evolution of the men's and women's weekends. "Throughout the history of the world, masculine and feminine roles were established that worked for many years. In more recent years of civilization, these roles have unraveled with politics, the industrial age, wars and all the conditions that called for the women's movement. The women's movement pushed us towards equality, but this posed new problems. The divorce rate went up. As a society, and as men and women, we had lost touch with the essence of the male and female roles that had worked for millions of years."

Sterling work explores the essence of what it means to be male and what it means to be female, and what each gender's roles and responsibilities can be. The goal is for men and women to be able to come together and have relationships that work. What is being distinguished here is energy - what is true masculine energy and what is true feminine energy. "The more unisexed a couple gets," reflects Boyer, "the more it loses its vitality." Rather than becoming androgynous, which implies a melding of gender energies, we need to become more clearly rooted in our masculine and female energies. "We need the distinction of masculine and feminine energies to understand who we are and what our inner selves are trying to tell us. This is not to say a man should shun his feminine energy. The key is learning to distinguish it."

An example of the difference between male and female energy is the way each gender feels a sense of essential expression. Men feel a sense of essential expression when they provide and act. Through acting, men connect with the resources of the world, helping do what needs to be done to move things forward. Women feel a sense of essential expression when they nurture and foster connections. To nurture, you have to fully connect with another human being, to be able to plug into another, experience what they are feeling and empathize with them. In this way, women keep the relational fabric of society together.

When we look at the symbols for male and female, the male symbol is like an arrow, pointing or directing, and the female symbol includes a circle, bringing together and including. Men may take women's nurturing efforts for granted. Unfortunately, women may not recognize the expression of emotional energy by men. When women nurture and when men work, each gender comes from their heart. This expresses an intention to emotionally be there for another. It is their way of trying to emotionally connect. For men and women to relate and get along, being able to recognize and appreciate these essential energies and their expression is fundamental.

A big piece of Sterling work is empowering people to become the men and women they always wanted to be. Our culture delivers lots of messages about what a man or women is supposed to be, but these messages may not ring true within an individual man or woman. "The Sterling Men's Weekend is promoted as a modern initiation into manhood. This culture lacks this kind of initiation. The closest thing we have is the military. The military, however, makes you into the man they or we want you to be. The Sterling weekend is about making you into the man you always wanted to be."

In order to serve the world at large, we need to have a clear strong sense of self, including a clear sense of gender identity. In this light, Sterling work helps men and women get rooted in that sense of self, so they can then come together to help shape a better world.

Conscious Relating: The New Paradigm for Love

While we have made progress in accepting same sex relationships between men and men and women and women, the culture as whole still offers a pretty narrow view of what constitutes an acceptable loving relationship. Our high divorce rate illustrates that even straight heterosexual men and women struggle in the most accepted form of relationship called marriage. Sexuality, intimacy and emotional needs are often difficult to talk about in relationships, and as a result it is hard for many people to be truthful in their expression of their sexuality.

Deborah Taj Anapol, a pioneer in the field of exploring conscious relating and integrating sexuality and spirituality, speaks of the new paradigm for love. "Right now what is occurring in consciousness is a marriage or blending between the masculine and feminine. With this shift comes an understanding of love as consciousness, rather than feelings for an object or love as something finite. The new paradigm for love is one of partnership, rather than a dominance/submissive form of relating."

Relationships are based on honesty when they come from a climate of mutual respect and emotional safety. In the old paradigm, when relationships fail, partners often distance from themselves and each other with lies of omission and commission. When intimate relationships are formed from a utilitarian base, responding to social expectations, economic necessity, or gender role expectations, it is hard for men and women alike to find an authentic way of relating. When relationships are formed from a more spiritually integrated place, one comes to a partner freely, from a place of unconditional love and choice.

When people are ashamed or afraid to admit their needs to themselves, never mind their partners, it is hard to have a paradigm for love. Learning to know ones emotional, sexual and intimate needs becomes a spiritual journey. For many people, alternative lifestyle options are needed for authentic and vital relating and expression. As we move through a paradigm shift, forms of relationship may need to adjust to accommodate our individual and collective growth and change. Committed relationships may range from marriage to God with a celibate lifestyle to polyamorous relationships where people are both emotionally committed and sexual with more than one partner. Some people commit emotionally to a primary relationship with a person of one gender, yet engage sexually with another person or other persons of the other gender. Some individuals and couples choose to study and practice sacred sexuality to increase both their sense of connection and pleasure.

Bob Francouer comments about the shifting paradigm, "I think the outcome is going to be a much greater, more open, tolerant diversity. Once premarital sex was taboo. Today, in many circles, including mainstream circles and even churches, premarital sexual relationships are taken for granted. We will see different lifestyles that are socially responsible and fulfilling for the individuals. As we live into our seventies, eighties, nineties and beyond, some people will change their pattern of relationships."

Where we will evolve to will be an interesting question. Women are taking a leading role in bringing an sex-spirit integration into the culture. More and more men are realizing they need to heal their wounded hearts to bring themselves more fully into their own lives and relationships. I am excited about the healing potential this emerging movement has for life on Earth. Perhaps, as we reconnect with our bodies, our hearts, our souls and one another we will indeed create a world that can live in greater harmony and peace.

The Boston Area Sexuality And Spirituality Network

In response to a groundswell of interest, the Boston Area Sexuality and Spirituality Network was founded in May 2002. The group exists to create a forum for people interested in integrating sexuality and spirituality to meet, dialogue and exchange resources. At the first meeting of BASSN, one of the themes was the need for an umbrella organization that embraced ALL forms of sexual, spiritual and gender expression. One member stated, "I can find a group of bisexual women pagans, but that group may not dialogue with transgendered Christians or hard-wired straight monogamous people." BASSN offers an umbrella, welcoming people who identify with the many dimensions of gender identity, orientation, sexual expression and spiritual identity.

What BASSN members have in common is the desire to create a community or tribe where INTEGRATION is possible, creating a safe space where people can explore and learn from both differences and common threads. The group sponsors monthly meetings, which are like mini-workshops. Topics the group has addressed so far include: integrating sexuality and spirituality: what does it mean?, the essence of gender, safe touch, ways of loving: forms of relationship, and sexual energy.

The group will be organizing a Sexuality and Spirituality Leadership Forum, gathering together pioneers in the S and S field to share their visions and work, and to see how everyone can work together to support one another and this emerging field.

What Is Pleural Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that affects the mesothelium, a membranous lining that surrounds the internal organs. The mesothelium that encloses the lungs is called the pleura; so pleural mesothelioma is the term used to refer to this cancer when it affects the lining of the lungs. The pleura is actually the most common location for this cancer to take hold. This is because the contaminants that cause the disease (usually asbestos fibers) enter the body through the airway and lodge in the lungs. However, it is important to note that pleural mesothelioma is not lung cancer.

Symptoms

Painful breathing, shortness of breath, constant, painful coughing, and chest pain are all common symptoms of the disease. Unexplained weight loss, fever, trouble swallowing, lower back pain, and a hoarse voice are additional issues that may occur with this cancer. Malignant mesothelioma can be present in the body for many decades before causing symptoms. When health problems do start to become evident, they may be mistaken for other illnesses. These are two reasons that this cancer is usually far advanced before it is detected.

Diagnosis

Since mesothelioma is most often caused by asbestos, a patient's history of exposure will be reviewed early on to determine the likelihood that the symptoms are being caused by this form of cancer. After a physical examination, several tests may be done to find out if mesothelioma is present. Chest X-rays, a CAT scan, and a PET scan are a few examples. An MRI and/or a pulmonary angiography are sometimes used for further confirmation of a diagnosis.

If abnormal results are detected that might indicate mesothelioma, a biopsy will need to be performed. This may be done using a fluid sample from the pleural lining or with a sample of the pleura itself. The larger the sample taken, the more accurate the results of the biopsy tend to be. Gene pattern analysis and other advanced tests may be performed on the tissue sample to determine exactly what type of cancer is present.

Treatment

The recommended approach for treating mesothelioma depends on how far the cancer has spread and the patient's overall health. Radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery may be the best option for some situations. A few individuals are even candidates for lung transplantation. In other cases, treatment focuses on relieving symptoms such as pleural effusion (fluid buildup around the lungs). There are many clinical trials underway to find more effective treatments for each stage of mesothelioma. These include advanced options such as immunotherapy and gene therapy.

Lawsuits

Many patients who are diagnosed with this cancer file a lawsuit with the assistance of a personal injury lawyer. The goal is to obtain mesothelioma compensation that will cover medical bills and compensate the victim for the pain and suffering caused by the disease. Family members may also choose to file a wrongful death suit following the death of an ill loved one who has died from mesothelioma. Because this disease is commonly diagnosed in elderly patients after the cancer has started spreading, the long-term survival rates are generally very poor.

Looking for a Pet Tracking Device?

There is no doubt that pets are family. One of the major selling points for GPS pet tracking devices is that pets are family members too and you would want to be able to locate a family member if they happened to get lost. Many Pet owners are often so attached to their pets that they feel the animal is almost as important as one of their children or siblings. The very idea of the animal becoming lost and not returning home upsets them so much the pet owner looks for way to monitor or keep track of their pet.

Another form of pet tracking is a microchip, which a veterinarian will inject into the pet this microchip contains information like the pet owner's name and address and any illnesses the pet has. There can be other information placed on this chip on a need to know basis. All this information actually can be found by the pet's registration number, which is found on the tracking chip being run through the pet registry. This does nothing in helping one find their pet. The pet must be found then brought to a veterinarians office and scan the microchip. Only then can they determine where the dog is from and to whom it belongs.

Cats, dogs, ferrets and any animal you can keep a collar on can be tracked by using a pet tracking collar, however you can place the GPS tracking device in other areas if you can get it to stay attached. There are also harnesses available that can contain the GPS device.

GPS pet tracking devices come in all shapes and sizes and have recently begun to get smaller and smaller. The more portable the device is the easier it is to use to locate the lost pet and get it home safely.

Some of these pet tracking devices actually connect through a cellular phone to show the location of the pet. This means that the pet owner has to be within range of a cellular phone tower to use these devices. One advantage to this is that you can be on the other side of the world and know where your pet is at any given time.

Another type of GPS pet tracking equipment uses radio waves and signals to locate the lost pet. These devices are generally more expensive and only cover up to about a mile in distance between the owner and lost pet. The benefits behind these particular pet trackers are that there is no other expense once they are purchased and you don't have to worry about having a phone signal or internet signal to track down your lost animal. They have a nice LCD screen that gives the pet owner a large array of information such as the distance between the pet and the owner, where the pet is located, which way the pet is going, and some even have compasses so that you know which direction you are going in.

There are also GPS tracking devices that use a web interface to locate the lost pet. The downside to these are unless you are able to use your cell phone or laptop computers you are pretty much going to need two people to carry out the search.

In order to keep peace of mind and to keep your pet safe, purchasing one of these devices is an excellent idea for every pet owner. Animals depend on their owners to look out for them and keep them safe from harm even though they do love the freedom of running throughout the neighborhood. All dogs, cats and any animal that can wear a collar definitely should have one of these types of GPS pet tracking devices just in case they wander to far from home one day.

Your Health Is Not As Important As You Think It Is?

Hundreds of new people join gyms each week so they can start a workout program...but these gyms never have to expand their locker rooms! It's true, they open with say, 200 lockers, have hundreds of new members each month and those 200 lockers will always be enough. Why? These Corporate Fitness Centers understand one very important thing about human nature... if we don't have huge, compelling reasons why we are getting fit, it will only be temporary.

Dr. Viktor Frankel in his classic book, Man's Search for Meaning, wrote about his experiences in the concentration camps of World War II. As a physician, Dr. Frankel wrote of his observations during this time that led to his philosophy on the importance of meaning in our lives. He found that those who had a BIG enough reason why they needed to survive experienced a survival rate that was many times greater than those who did not. LARGE, compelling reasons seemed to literally turn on and amplify different areas of the brain. And you know what? He was right! Modern day technologies such as PET scanning and MRI's have allowed scientists to actually watch this happen in the brain.

Are you having trouble reaching your goals for more vibrant health? Chances are good that you may not have a big enough reason why. Many times when we set our goals, as they relate to our health, we use logical reasons to attempt to motivate ourselves. This fails almost every time. To motivate ourselves with passion that will ignite our actions for the long haul, we must build our reasons around emotionally triggered ideas. Far more people will work to lose weight to become more appealing to the opposite sex than will ever do the same to improve their cardiac profile. Make your reasons as emotionally loaded as possible, and watch your motivation literally explode.

Dreams and Depression: Was Sigmund Freud Correct?

Sigmund Freud was one of the most influential people of the 20th century. He claimed that depression and anxiety are influenced by factors that affect us in childhood, and that interpreting dreams can lead us to the childhood causes. He felt that psychotherapy could make emotionally sick people healthy by getting them to understand that what happens in childhood can cause them to develop depression, anxiety and schizophrenia.

For 50 years, Freud was one of the most revered scientists on earth. Then scientists discovered neurotransmitters, chemicals that pass messages from one nerve to another. They found that people who hallucinate and are not able to think clearly are schizophrenic because their brains make too much dopamine or glutamate; that people are depressed because their brains make too little norepinephrine and serotonin; that people who shake with Parkinson's disease do so because their brains make too little dopamine; and that people who lose their ability to reason and remember because they suffer from Alzheimer's disease have too little acetyl choline. So now these diseases are treated with drugs that raise or lower brain levels of neurotransmitters. Drugs, like Mirapex, raise dopamine levels to treat Parkinson's disease. Drugs such a Paxil, Prozac, and Zoloft to raise brain levels of serotonin and treat depression. Modern psychiatrists know that you cannot treat chemical depression, schizophrenia or anxiety just with talking. You treat mental disorders with drugs to correct abnormal brain levels of neurotransmitters.

But wait a minute. Because today psychiatrists treat depression, anxiety and schizophrenia with drugs, doesn't mean that Freud was wrong. Psychiatrists cannot talk people out of mental disease, but new scientific marvels called pet scans, electroencephalograms, MRIs and so forth show why Freud was right. When you go to sleep at night, your eyes are still. After a while, your eyes dart from side to side rapidly. This is called Rapid Eye Movement sleep or REM for short, and during REM you have dreams. If you wake up, you can report your dreams, but if you try to remember your dream a few hours later, you usually can't. During REM sleep, the part of your brain that governs emotions and visual imagery are activated, while the part of you brain associated with rational thought and reasoning are turned off. So dreams may uninhibit you so you can think about things that may be too painful to think about when you are awake. Or dreams may allow you to discover things about yourself that you would never tell directly to anyone, let alone your doctor.

So, 100 years after Freud published his Interpretation of Dreams, we can see that he may be right because dreams can be a clue to why we feel depressed, anxious and may reason poorly. But psychotherapy, by itself, has not been shown to be an effective treatment for most cases of depression, anxiety or schizophrenia. On the other hand, psychotherapy plus medication is more effective than medication alone to treat anxiety and depression. Psychotherapy can help people cope better with their problems and interpreting dreams can help them understand why they are what they are. Even though many theories proposed by Freud one hundred years ago appear to be wrong, Freud remains one of the most brilliant contributing intellectuals of the 20th century.

ADD - Common Misconceptions and the Truths

Many people, even very intelligent people ask, "Does ADD exist?" Diet, poor schools, shoddy education, or even bad parenting have been blamed for ADD. Research has shown that ADD does exist and can be seen on SPECT and PET scans. Yet it has been hard to convince the general public that childhood ADD existed. Many think it is outgrown by the time children are teenagers.

ADD is now known as a genetic condition. People are born with ADD. Erratic attention span, boredom, low tolerance of frustration and disorganization are some of the textbook signs of ADD. Adults, though intelligent and motivated, have trouble with time management, follow-through and making simple decisions. Many of these adults choose careers that are intense and keep one "on-edge".

Scientifically, ADD can be viewed as a problem with the blood flow on the prefrontal cortex. When someone with ADD is relaxed, such as listening to calm music, the blood flows normally. But under a little more stress, such as balancing a simple checkbook, the blood flows less unlike other brains. When the ADD brain is under more stress, such as taking a test, it gets even less blood, gets confused, or sometimes shuts down. These individuals have been known to complain that the harder they try something, the harder the task gets.

All is not bad with ADD. Some famous and talented people have had ADD. These people include Ansel Adams, Beethoven, Mozart, Emily Bronte, Napoleon, Isaac Newton, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Vincent Van Gogh, Howard Hughes and Virginia Woolf, among others. People with ADD are often highly intelligent, imaginative and creative. The crucial point is that once a person is diagnosed with ADD, he learns to cope and it is as if an untapped part of the brain is revealed. Some say this allows them to embrace their true nature and see ADD as a healthy state of the brain.

A checklist cannot diagnose ADD. Even people who have a high amount of positive answers in these checklists do not have ADD. These same answers can point to other conditions. Individuals who have typical features of ADD and who have a sole diagnosis of ADD, can be fairly easily identified. But individuals who have a bigger pattern or health problem and ADD exists need a professional with experience, sound judgment and knowledge of this condition. Studies have shown that by mid to late adolescence, ADD is often complicated by a related condition such as depression, OCD, alcohol or drug abuse, Tourettes, or rage reactions.

Not so long ago a generation of psychiatrists viewed that there was no adult ADD. This view was shared by almost everyone else. These adults with ADD were diagnosed with panic, obsessive compulsive disorder, depression, eating additions or disorders as if these were their only condition. These psychiatrists did not recognize that substance abuse also played a part in self-medication of ADD.

It took so long to find adult ADD because we are just recently learning about the brain. It has been a mystery as to how the brain works. There are new found breakthroughs in molecular biology and genetics and we are now beginning to understand the brain. We have tools that help to see thoughts and emotions. In the last ten years, we have learned much more than in all of previous history. It is widely believed that we will double our knowledge base every ten years.

Prognosis for Small Cell Lung Cancer: Face It Fighting

Prognosis for small cell lung cancer is no good news. Having it means you have aggressive malignant (cancer) cells in the tissues of your lung. Unless stopped, these cancerous cells will spread and destroy your healthy cells. Lung cancer is the leading cause of death affecting hundreds of thousands of men and women. Only 5% of those found afflicted managed to survive within a five year study period. The 95% did not make it despite radiation, chemotherapy or surgery. The other type of lung cancer is the non-small cell. This one is categorized into 3 sub-types, the squamous or epidermoid carcinoma, the adnocarcinoma and the large cell carcinoma or anaplastic. All three have low survival rates.

How far the small cell cancer has spread is determined by means of staging. Your treatment will be planned and implemented based on the stage of the disease. One way of finding out is by the clinical staging system which is based on the results of imaging tests such as the CT scan, MRI, chest x-ray, PET scan, biopsies and physical exam. If you underwent surgery, your doctor can discern based on a pathologic stage. You may have already heard or are aware of stage 1,2,3,4 in describing cancer. This is the TNM staging system which uses roman numerals 0 to IV (4) to describe the growth and spread of lung cancer. Under this system, the higher the number, the more serious is the spread of the cancer.

With the small lung cancer or oat cell, it can either be limited or extensive. Since diagnosis of this disease is usually detected when the cancer has already spread, majority of people have the extensive type. What it means is that the cancerous cells have invaded other parts of the body to include even the brain. Survival outlook or prognosis for small cell lung cancer is bad news for most of the cancer victims. According to the NCI's statistics, survival rate is very low for all stages of people with small cell lung cancer.

There are many stories of people who lost hope, went into depression and self blame after being diagnosed of lung cancer. They blamed their condition to smoking addiction. Aside from tobacco smoking, medical findings conclude other causes such as pollution, exposure to dangerous chemicals like asbestos, uranium, radon, etc. Your lungs are responsible for bringing oxygen into the body as you inhale and take out carbon dioxide as you exhale. When your lungs get affected with lung cancer, you experience shortness of breath, chest pain, etc.

How do you cope up with life as a cancer fighting survivor? There are many ways that you can fight it out if this will be your posture. Your belief, self-confidence, determination to wage a battle against your adversary and strong faith in whatever is the Creator's will is very important. So, first thing you need to do is know the weakness and strength of your enemy. You need to educate yourself about the intricacies of lung cancer, latest hi tech laser or cell treatments and alternative remedies. Try to research as many success stories you can find from all sources in the web through Google search, internet sites of cancer research organizations like American Cancer Society and National Cancer Institute.

You have to change your lifestyle. Get plenty of fresh air and sunshine, eat plenty of fruits, nuts and vegetables, and take lots of vitamins and natural nutritional supplements like maqui berry, pomegranates and green barley. Drink plenty of purified water every day, engage in regular moderate simple exercises, yoga and meditation. For your spiritual well being, commune and pray daily to your God.

Do this passionately with the support of your doctors, friends, relatives and loved ones. Despite the negative prognosis for small cell lung cancer, the lifestyle change can improve the quality of your life, and possibly even the victor. Join social networking cancer survivor clubs. There are more than 400,000 lung cancer survivors in the United States. Participate in forums and read blogs. In short, take an active stand and face your battle standing up with your own army of fighters and supporters from all over the world hoping, urging, encouraging, inspiring, motivating, pushing and praying for you to fight it out all the way win or lose! Believe that you will win!

Creativity and Flow

The experience of optimal functioning called flow enhances creativity, and can be nurtured in our own lives, says the psychologist who developed the concept.

Author of "Flow: the Psychology of Optimal Experience" and a number of related books, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (pronounced me-high chick-sent-me-high) says we can facilitate the conditions for this experience, and that it may be found in a wide range of careers and activities.

For his doctoral thesis on "how visual artists create art" he studied photos taken every three minutes as artists created a painting. He said in a newspaper interview that he was "struck by how deeply they were involved in work, forgetting everything else."

He went on to study chess players, rock climbers, dancers, musicians and others. "I expected to find substantial differences in all their activities," he notes, "but people reported very similar accounts of how they felt. Then, I started looking at professions like surgery and found the same elements there - a challenge which provides clear, high goals and immediate feedback. They forget themselves, the time, their problems."

He cautions that many people misunderstand flow as a kind of passive "spacing out" and seek it in ordinary leisure activities. "Most people look so much forward to being home, relaxing. Then they get home and don't know what to do. They aren't challenged, so they sit in front of the TV, depressed."

Instead of "spacing out," flow is rather the experience resulting from a person's body or mind being "stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile."

Athletes refer to being in the "zone" - an optimal psychological and physiological climate for peak performance.

The legendary Ted Williams has said that sometimes he could see the seams on a pitched baseball. Gymnast Carol Johnson found that on some days she experienced the balance beam as wider, so "any worry of falling off disappeared."

Sports psychologists and trainers use a range of techniques such as progressive muscle relaxation, concentration exercises and meditation to help people access this "zone." One of the consistent themes of these approaches is the need to "get around" the conscious mind.

But Csikszentmihalyi has warned "You can't make flow happen. All you can do is learn to remove obstacles in its way." He says the effort to recapture the high of a perfect run down a ski slope, for example, will rarely succeed because "you're splitting your attention from what's happening now."

Using PET scan technology (Positron Emission Tomography), researchers at the University of California, Irvine, have found that people learning to master a video game show a reduction in the overall metabolism of the brain - less brain activity along with greater skill. This indicates that increasing ability results in better efficiency, and the brain can "relax into" the task. This may be the physiological result, or perhaps a central cause, of decreasing the "static" of non-flow consciousness.

Csikszentmihalyi points out that "Some flow experiences involve low danger, like reading a good book. But certain people are disposed to respond to risk, and their flow will depend on it more than somebody else's. Danger is the hook. But their descriptions are not that different from, say, a Thai woman's description of weaving a rug. The quality of concentration, forgetfulness, involvement, control are similar."

Csikszentmihalyi's suggestions for experiencing flow include picking an enjoyable activity that is at or slightly above your skill level; continually raising the level of challenge as performance improves; screening out distraction as much as possible; focusing attention on all the emotional and sensory qualities of the activity, and looking for regular feedback, or concrete goals to monitor progress, even if it is a large or long-term project with delayed outcome.

Writing a short story, or raising a child, can be contexts for flow experience: you can see them as a series of short-term steps or events, each having value in engaging one's talents.

Other examples of "flow activities" are games, artistic performances and religious rituals, but Csikszentmihalyi notes that "people seem to get more flow from what they do on their jobs than from leisure activities" - perhaps especially those kinds of jobs which demand full attention, like surgery or computer programming.

Writer Susan K. Perry, Ph.D. affirms that flow is not a state of 'no mind' or meditativeness as such. "I don't believe that when you get into a creative place, you're giving up thinking," she said in our interview. "You're super-thinking -- better and with more parts of your mind than you do normally."

But having a 'busy mind' can also mean being fragmented, unfocused, distracted. "You want to get to a place which is both loose, relaxed, and focused," she notes. "What I found in my studies of flow are that two things you need to do to get to this place where time stops and you can be most creative, are to loosen up, and focus in."

"It's a paradox, obviously, to be loose and focused at the same time," she admits. "And they overlap, and one may come before the other." She also thinks we "choose not to get into flow, which means we aren't able to access our deepest creativity. We choose not to because, perhaps, it's more stimulating to be surrounded by overflowing inboxes."

Achieving flow may present a greater challenge for gifted and talented people, who often experience high levels of excitability and intensity, but it is worth the effort to remove the obstacles in the way of feeling flow. That state of awareness is where we are most creatively alive.

Sasha's Blend Helps Keep Dogs Fit

Have you ever scanned through the ingredients list of a cereal box and thought, "how can this be healthy" as you walk down the grocery aisles? This question goes the same and should be thought about when giving your dog his food. Sure, your dog might eat anything, but that doesn't mean that they are invincible. Dogs, too, have their own nutritional needs, and it is up to their owners to make sure they have everything through proper diet. By just simply giving dogs what is on the table, they might not be able to get all the daily nutrition their body requires. Giving your pet treats, specifically formulated for their breed, will help in giving them the right nutritional requirements they need. Sasha's Blend is a dog treat that is designed to supplement your dog's every day dietetic requirement. Adding this dog treat to you pet's diet will assure you that he is getting the right amount of vitamins and nutrients for his body.

Dogs, by nature, are active and have lots of mobility going. They like to run around and chase after things. They need the right amount of calcium and magnesium intake to keep their bones strong and healthy; and like humans, their bones and joints, become brittle and grow weak, thus affecting their usual activities. Active dogs, especially those who have roles in toiling, need enough fats and protein to give them the energy they need to complete their routines. Treats such as Sasha's Blend can help avoid bones and joints troubles and at the same time provide your pets with the energy they require for their activities. Aside from exercises and good grooming, these treats will also help keep your dog healthy by providing vitamins and minerals they require. Physical signs of a healthy dog are: smooth skin that has no scabs and flakes, glossy coat with no bald spots and excessive oiliness, bright and shiny eyes with only minimal amount of tears and mucus, and cool and moist nose.

Keep in mind that if you want to have your canine best friend beside you for a long time, it is necessary to always take care of him by keeping him fit and healthy. Keep him active and on the go with constant activities and exercises. Groom and give him regular baths. Bring him to a vet to get some necessary shots. But most importantly, help him maintain a proper diet by giving him dog treats. It is a must to note the quality of the things to purchase for your pet. Carefully read the labels and see to it that this is what he really needs. All of these things needed to keep a dog in top condition are available in pet shops and even in grocery stores.

Consciousness: Man and Machine?

A popular idea now-a-days is the notion of the ghost in the

machine. From scientific articles to entertainment, this

reference is to the idea of consciousness. Once again, the

study of consciousness is occupying the minds of science

and science fiction.

Just after the turn of the century, science basically

abandoned the study of consciousness per se' on the

grounds that it was too ambiguous and non-quantifiable.

However, the development of artificial intelligence, so-called

thinking computers, interactive virtual reality environments

and non-local action, or action at a distance, has placed the

study of consciousness in the fore front of many minds.

What is consciousness? This issue is devoted to some of

the intrigue involved in efforts to create "thinking machines"

modeled after man, minus of course, his limitations.

EARLY TALK

Language is often thought to be the tool of consciousness

and evidence for the kind of consciousness that makes

man different from monkeys. Indeed, language has often

been referred to as the "jewel of cognition." Some scientists

have argued that Neanderthal man possessed advanced

talking ability. This assertion is largely based upon a neck

bone found in 1988 (SN: 4/24/93, p.262). Other scientists

argue for a more recent origin to speech. Recent in this

sense is between 50 and 100 thousand years ago. By

contrast, early origin theorists date the beginning of

language at over 2 million years ago.

The evolution and history of language has a bearing on

certain philosophical issues where consciousness is

concerned. For example, take any date for the first

appearance of language. Let's for fun just assume some

hairy bi-pedal creature that has never spoken. Is this

creature conscious? Conscious in the sense of man? Now

one day the creature utters some meaningful form of

speech. Not a grunt or guttural sound like all animals, but

some form, beginning, of speech. Is the animal now

conscious?

What is the difference between the consciousness of

animals and man? What is intended by distinguishing

between the two conscious forms as different and why? If a

primate species shows the ability to learn, remember and

associate learnings, some insist this is evidence for

reason. Most flatly refuse to recognize it as such. Is it

possible that by recognizing the field of consciousness as

one worthy and ripe for study, that mans' consciousness will

lose its unique elevated status? What precisely is it that one

means by consciousness anyway?

Certainly reason preceded language. It would be rather odd

if it were the other way around. Still, that's an interesting

thought.

Some seem to reason only with the tools of their language.

In other words, their reason is limited by the rules and

definitions of their language. Plus, there is some argument

in favor of certain language structure as having greater or

lesser faculties for developing logical thinking. Literal

languages, for example, such as German, tend to

encourage the development of logical thinkers. However

intriguing all this may be, it still stands to reason that reason

preceded the conceptualization and development of speech.

As such, one is hard pressed to limit the consciousness of

a species on the basis of sound patterns called speech.

Oh, and it gets still tougher. For there are sound patterns

that resemble speech uttered by so-called non-conscious

animals such as whales and dolphins. So, what is

consciousness?

Is consciousness a matter of wakefulness? No, it can't be

just that for one can be a conscious being and still be

asleep. Is consciousness memory? Well, according to the

experiments of Cleve Baxter, plants exhibit memory. Where

science abandoned the study of consciousness years ago,

the problems inherent to describing consciousness have

proliferated during the absence. The advent of animal

studies, plant studies and synthetic or artificial intelligence

have greatly complicated the matters of consciousness. Or

perhaps, in the alternative, simplified them.

LANGUAGE AND THE BRAIN

For most people, parts of the left brain handle the affairs of

language. Brain hemispheric studies including the now

popular Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans show

that the right ear sends acoustic information to the left

hemisphere. Well, according to Marc Hauser of Harvard

University and Karin Andersson of Radcliff College in

Cambridge, rhesus monkeys "display a similar cerebral

setup, with the left half of the brain often taking responsibility

for vocalizations intended to signal aggression" (SN:

5/21/94, p333). If this is true, does this mean that the

anatomical evidence for language processing is evidence

for consciousness in the sense that we normally think of

mankind's consciousness. If not, what are the differences?

CONSCIOUSNESS AND THE BRAIN

For many, mind equals brain. Mind is a more general terms

that refers to the processes handled by brain. Therefore,

mind is often an interchangeable term with consciousness.

Is mind equal to brain? The chief area of enquiry offering

evidence one way or another to this question is a discipline

often held in poor regard. Still, literally thousands of

laboratory experiments in scientific parapsychology

demonstrate that there are many aspects of mind that can

not be reduced to anatomical or material brain.

For example, data clearly supports the "reality" of telepathy,

clairvoyance and psychokinesis. This seems obvious to this

commentator, but then the biographies of some of the

world's most respected people provide a richer picture than

that found in science. However, the point is simple. Whether

it is from the genius of Einstein or the laboratory of a

modern parapsychologist, mind is not equal to brain! What

does this mean with respect to consciousness?

A wonderful Star Trek adventure that I can remember had

the Enterprise actually forming its own consciousness and

then creating a new life form. Somehow, as Mr. Data

explained, the activity of the starship's computers and

records began to take on a "more than the sum of the parts"

activity, form its own neural network and so forth. Will

machines ever become conscious?

SIMULATED CREATURES EVOLVE AND LEARN

This was the headline in a recent Science News

publication: Simulated Creatures Evolve and Learn. The

article by Richard Lipkin went on to cite the work of Karl

Sims of Thinking Machines in Cambridge, Mass., who

"devised a simulated evolutionary system in which virtual

creatures compete for resources in a three-dimensional

arena...The creatures, resembling toy-block robots, enter

one-on-one contests in which they vie for control of a

desired object---an extra cube. Winners---deemed more

fit---reproduce, while losers bear no offspring. Sims endows

the virtual environment with physical parameters, such as

gravity and friction, and restricts behaviors to plausible

physical actions" (SN: 7/23/94, p63). Sims believes that it

may be easier to evolve virtual entities with intelligent

behavior than to create them from scratch. Artificial

intelligence researchers have long sought to develop the

so-called thinking machine. Unlike Sims, most begin by

attempting to model the computer after the patterns of man.

For some, this is the neural model of the brain while for

others it is the deductive/inductive model of reason.

Perhaps Sims' method is more man-like than the other two.

Mankind is thought to have evolved. Does this help us

understand consciousness? Oh, and what about the

collective of consciousness? Will machines soon be

contributing to this field of consciousness? Will a machine

ever dream?

DREAMS, INTUITION AND CONSCIOUSNESS

The "Genius Hypothesis" advanced by Ervin Laszlo and

reported in the Journal of Scientific Exploration (Vol.8, No.2,

pp257-267, 1994), asserts that the minds "of unusually

creative people are in spontaneous, direct, though usually

not conscious, interaction with other minds in the creative

process itself." Laszlo's paper sheds light on the "archetypal

experience" described by Carl Jung while using history,

physics, psychology, artistic production and cultural

development to clearly suggest the strong possibility (in

this

commentators opinion, the only real possibility) that not only

do minds communicate, but they do so at a distance as

well!

Is the collective, or the shared consciousness experience,

an independent consciousness? Is it possible that unique

(individual) conscious entities participate as transceivers,

sending and receiving, and that the total of consciousness

is this collective? Does the collective have a plan, a will,

does it dream? Or is it just a repository? Does it have a

neural network or some analogous something that we

might refer to as a non-spatial field? I mean, its not organic

or silicone is it?

CONSCIOUS OF CONSCIOUSNESS

Perhaps consciousness is something that has to do with

being conscious of consciousness. I mean, are monkeys

truly conscious of being conscious? Could they even

entertain the idea of consciousness without an object? Or

consciousness as a character in someone else's dream?

Does a monkey ask itself if it really exists?

Is that a fair direction to take our questions regarding

consciousness? After all, are we not likely to be forced to

admit the notion of "devolution" if we do? Are there not all

together too many homo sapien sapiens on the planet that

don't give the proverbial "hoot" about who they are or where

they came from. How many of these people ask the

question, "Do I really exist?" Will silicone ask the question,

"Who am I?" If the Japanese have their way, the answer

is---probably! A "Darwin Machine" is being created by

researchers at ATR laboratories in Kyoto, Japan. The

artificial brain which uses an evolving neural network is due

to be completed by 2001. Hugo de Garis, an ATR scientist,

says the purpose is to produce a silicone brain with more

than 1 billion artificial neurons.

Science News says the machine "will come in the form of a

neural network and will exist within a massively parallel

computer. To create such a complex system, the

researchers will have the network build itself. 'Cellular

automata,' each one a distinct computer program, will

actually forge their own linkages."

This approach, called "evolutionary engineering," provides

for the growth of the silicone brain via connections. "The

neural net grows when cellular automata send 'growth

signals' to each other, then connect via synapses."

(And you thought genetic engineering was something to

wonder about).

CONSCIOUSNESS WITHOUT A DEFINITION

Defining consciousness turns out to be a process

somewhat a-kin to searching for the core of an onion. As we

enter the new year, and perhaps entertain thoughts of the

upcoming turn of the century, revisiting consciousness is

more than a philosophical exercise or a scientific enquiry. It

is a duty, even a moral imperative, to re-evaluate the nature

of consciousness for this inherently devises the strategy by

which mankind treats itself and all life. For me, and I

suspect for many others, many changes are seen as

necessary for the human race to actualize the highest of its

potentials. As in history, most certainly some of these

changes will be brought about by difficult times. I am

reminded of something Martin Luther King said, "I can never

be what I ought to be, until you are what you ought to be."

King went on to point out that it was precisely the

inter-related fabric of life that each of us was interdependent

upon.

Perhaps, it is the inter-related nature of all life,

consciousness itself, that we are interdependent upon.

Perhaps, just perhaps, mankind will only know his highest

most noble self when he offers the deepest of respect for all

life. Perhaps the invigorated enthusiasm searching for a

firm hold on this stuff called consciousness will eventually

give rise to the respect I speak of.

Thank you and BE WELL & HAPPY!

New Methods in Great Parenting

For sure parents would like to give the best to our children and we would like them to maximize their full potential when they work their way around in this world. One of the best things that we can impart them is to give them the best education there is available. In regards to this, it is important to acknowledge that their mental development is crucial. And when there is an opportunity for them to reach their maximum mental potential, we will provide that to them.

Good news to all parents. Recent research shows that music affects brain development. There is a strong correlation that exists between musical training for children and certain other mental abilities. In past generations, singing and playing instruments was an integral part of family life. Music was a great way to express our feelings and entertain others in the process. Little did we know that this practice was exercising our brain causing us to be creative, more vibrant, smarter, and a lot more.

The emergence of advanced technology has allowed scientists to actually see brain activity via PET scans and MRI imaging scanning the blood flow in the brain. It is interesting to note that the human brain has four parts i.e. right/left brain and music makes all of the areas "light up". In addition, new neural pathways in our brains are created as a person is learning and playing an instrument. Laurel Trainor, director of the Institute for music and the Mind at McMaster University in West Hamilton, Ontario says that a year or two of music training leads to enhanced levels of memory and attention.

Therefore, introducing your kids to music is a great investment for their mental development. Antoine Shahin of Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio found out that brain responses triggered by listening to musical sound increases with age and the greatest increase occur between the ages 10 to 13. And according to him, this most likely indicates a sensitive period for music and speech acquisition.

Early childhood music education is therefore highly recommended for your child's optimum growth. Music education offered in schools is one way of introducing music to your child. There are also alternative and more creative ways of teaching music concepts. One of which is Freddie the FrogR which is quickly becoming the mascot of music education for kids. Sharon Burch, music teacher and author of the series, teaches music to the readers as they enjoy the stories. Freddie and his friends through their adventures provide an accessible and entertaining form of music education for use at school and home.

The Latest in Diagnosis and Treatment of Stomach Cancer

The stomach is a sac-like organ located in the upper abdomen between the esophagus and small intestine. It is part of the digestive system, functioning in the storage and digestion of food through the secretion of gastric juices. After leaving the stomach, partly-digested food passes into the small intestine and then into the large intestine.

The development of stomach cancer, also referred to as gastric cancer, usually occurs as a result of chronic inflammation. This can be due to both external and internal risk factors. A risk factor is anything that increases your risk of getting a disease. Risk factors for the development of gastric cancer include the following:

• Having any of the following medical conditions:

- Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection of the stomach.

- Chronic gastritis (inflammation of the stomach).

- Pernicious anemia.

- Intestinal metaplasia (a condition in which the normal stomach lining is replaced with the cells that line the intestines).

- Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) or gastric polyps.

• Eating a diet high in salted, smoked foods and low in fruits and vegetables.

• Eating foods that have not been prepared or stored properly.

• Being over the age of 55 or male.

• Smoking cigarettes.

• Having a mother, father, sister, or brother who has had stomach cancer.

According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), approximately 760,000 cases of stomach cancer are diagnosed worldwide and more than 24,000 cases are diagnosed in the United States each year. Incidence is highest in Japan, South America, Eastern Europe, and parts of the Middle East. Worldwide, stomach cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths. The overall prognosis of stomach cancer is poor because detection rarely occurs at the preclinical stage.

Diagnosis of stomach cancer involves taking a detailed medical history and performing a physical examination. Because of the size of the stomach, early symptoms are often non-specific and physical findings are not present until the advanced stages of disease. Symptoms in the early stages of gastric cancer include indigestion, stomach discomfort, a bloated feeling after eating, mild nausea, loss of appetite, or heartburn. In more advanced stages of gastric cancer patients may present with more intense stomach pain, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, weight loss for no known reason, blood in the stool, or a palpable mass on physical exam.

Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (EGD) is the gold standard procedure for the detection and diagnosis of gastric cancer. In this procedure an endoscope (a thin, lighted tube containing a camera) is passed through the mouth and down the throat examining the inside of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum (first part of the small intestine) to check for abnormal areas. Any unusual masses, protrusions, or ulcerations can be biopsied and sent for pathological analysis to determine if cancer cells are present.

Once the diagnosis of gastric cancer has been made, the progression of the extent of disease needs to be determined prior to any interventional treatment. This is done through a process called Staging. Once doctors have adequately staged the cancer and know the extent to which it has spread to other parts of the body, they can decide on the best course of treatment. CT Scans and PET Scans have been used for staging to detect the spread of disease to distant parts of the body. Recently, Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) has been used in assessing depth of tumor invasion, involvement of regional lymph nodes, or invasion of adjacent organs. Endoscopic Ultrasound allows for a more precise preoperative assessment of the tumor stage and permits the identification of the subset of patients who are candidates for preoperative chemoradiation therapy.

Surgery for Gastric Cancer

The extent of surgery for the treatment of stomach cancer depends on the extent of the disease. Endoscopic mucosal resection may be used to treat early stomach cancer (tumors smaller than 3 cm that have not invaded the innermost layer of the stomach lining called the submucosa). This procedure involves removing only the tumor and surrounding tissue.

Gastrectomy is the most common treatment for stomach cancer. In this surgery, the entire stomach (total gastrectomy) or part of the stomach (partial or sub-total gastrectomy) is removed. Parts of nearby tissues or organs (e.g., the spleen) may also be removed if involved with tumor. Surrounding lymph nodes are also removed.

Following total gastrectomy, the esophagus is attached directly to the small intestine. When a partial or sub-total gastrectomy is done, the remaining stomach is attached to the small intestine. The connection between these organs is called an anastomosis.

Like any major surgery patients may experience postsurgical pain, weakness, fatigue, and loss of appetite following surgery for gastric cancer. Recovery from the procedure varies depending on the patient's age and overall health, the type of surgery, and the stage of the disease.

Removal of a large part or all of the stomach usually requires permanent alterations in diet. Patients often must eat more frequently, eat smaller meals, reduce their sugar intake, and increase their intake of fat and protein. If a small section is removed, patients may be able to gradually return to previous eating habits.

Radiation therapy

Radiation therapy uses high-powered beams of energy to kill cancer cells. The energy beams come from a machine that moves around you as you lie on a table. Radiation therapy can be used before surgery (neoadjuvant radiation) to shrink a stomach tumor so it's more easily removed. Radiation therapy can also be used after surgery (adjuvant radiation) to kill any cancer cells that might remain around your stomach to prevent local recurrence. Radiation is often combined with chemotherapy. In cases of advanced cancer, radiation therapy may be used to relieve side effects caused by a large tumor.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is a drug treatment that uses chemicals to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy drugs travel throughout your body, killing cancer cells that may have spread beyond the stomach. Chemotherapy can be given before surgery (neoadjuvant chemotherapy) to help shrink a tumor so it can be more easily removed. Chemotherapy is also used after surgery (adjuvant chemotherapy) to kill any cancer cells that might remain in the body. Chemotherapy is often combined with radiation therapy. Chemotherapy may be used alone in people with advanced stomach cancer to help relieve signs and symptoms.

Recent studies have shown that the combination of preoperative radiation and chemotherapy in patients with locally advanced stomach cancer leads to an increase in the likelihood of surgical resection, and an improvement in disease free and overall survival. The addition of radiation and chemotherapy postoperatively has also been shown to decrease tumor recurrence and positively affect patient survival.

Overall prognosis depends on the stage of the disease. Stomach cancer metastasizes to distant parts of the body in as many as 80% of cases, resulting in a very poor prognosis. In Japan, where stomach cancer is often diagnosed early, the 5-year survival rate is about 50%. In the United States and most of the Western world, the 5-year survival rate ranges from 5-15%.
