There are also more job opportunities for radiographers who have undergone further training to specialize in operating more complex radiology equipment such as CT scans, MRIs, mammography, and PET scans.

With the increasing demand for radiology technologists and a median income of $52,000 per year, more people are becoming interested in studying radiology technology. More schools have started to establish programs gearing towards a career as a radiographer and are offering different degree options such as a 2-year associate's degree, a four-year bachelor's degree, and a one-year diploma. Because a radiology associate's degree program is shorter and it puts technologists into the working environment faster, prospective radiographers are most commonly enrolling in 2-year colleges.

A radiology technology program usually requires students to possess a high school diploma or an equivalent such as a GED. Students will need to complete science pre-requisites such as human anatomy and human physiology with lab units, English, elementary algebra, and medical terminology. Other high school level science courses such as chemistry, physics, and biology are also useful for understanding the course material.
