Dog Identity Name Tags - Discs - What Information is Legally Required in the UK?

Over the years I've had the fortune to meet hundreds of dog owners in the UK, who all have one thing in common - they all love their dogs and consider them part of the family. However, when it comes to making sure their dog is properly identified, there appears to be much confusion amongst dog owners, and worryingly many of those questioned weren't even aware of the laws in the UK with respect to identifying their pet properly!

17 years ago a new law was introduced into the UK;

"The Control of Dogs Order 1992 mandates that any dog in a public place must wear a collar with the name and address (including postcode) of the owner engraved or written on it, or engraved on a tag. Your telephone number is optional (but advisable)." [ref Kennel Club website]

Almost two decades later, people are still not aware of this piece of legislation when they buy their dog!

You wouldn't believe how many dog owners are happy to boast how they've bought a lovely new diamante collar for their lovely spoilt pooch, how they've spent a small fortune on toys, bedding, food treats, etc. And yet, is never occurred to them that they haven't arranged for the single most important item of all... the pet id tag!  Pet identification is important because without it, if your dog is caught in public, you risk a fine of up to £5,000!! Not only that, but imagine your new expensive designer dog decides he wants to bolt off and dig under your garden fence one day. Off he goes and you don't see him again for 24 hours. What do you do? The dog will be unable to tell anyone he meets where his address is, what your phone number is, so it's upto the person who found the dog to try and now find you, the owner. Without full identification (pet ID tag, embroidered dog collar, and microchipping), you stand little or no chance of ever seeing your dog again should it go missing.

So, remember, get your pet id disc arrange today to avoid problems in the future, with a possible lost dog, or a tangle with the law.  We recommend dog tags with are thicker, high quality, to avoid them wearing out. We also suggest that you get your dog collar embroidered with your name and phone number, just incase the dog id tag came loose. And finally, make sure your dog is chipped, should it ever be taken back to the police or vets for scanning.

Not many, but a couple of places in the UK sell 'deep engraved' dog id tags, which are very different from the cheaper 'scratch' engraved tags which will wear out quickly. They're deeply rotary engraved in the chunky nickel plated metal, and blackened, so that they last for years, and the engraving is clearly read!  Imagine the person that found your dog suffered from poor sight, and couldn't read your dog id tag? Make sure they can, by getting the best quality dog id tag you can find therefore.

To recap, your dog identity disc needs to have the following items engraved on it to remain within English Law;

1. Your Name

2. Your Address inc. postcode

3. Preferably your telephone number

We also recommend that you add something like "I am microchipped" or "Please scan me" on the tag.

Don't risk putting it off until tomorrow, if you haven't got your pet dog or cat clearly identified, then buy a tag online today. If you have already got one, then go check it... is the engraving still clearly legible? Are your details still current and up to date? Finally, if you only have a pet id tag, then think about adding an embroidered collar and getting your dog microchipped to give you triple confidence that you have your pet identification sorted as best you can.

Thank you, and we hope you've found this article informative.
